FIre Cider - Food as Medicine - Immune Elixir

fire cider

One of our daily morning rituals throughout most of the school year are little tea cups of a little concoction known at our house as Dragon Cider.  This is our version of Fire 🔥 Cider. We use it to boost immune systems and protect our family from all the stuff that gets passed around and around this time of year. (many of the teenagers that frequent our home also know to ask for it when they feel like they are coming down with something ❤️)

I learned to make Fire Cider in a class taught by Rosemary Gladstar – a beloved and knowledgable herbalist who has influenced herbal medicine for many decades here in the US and around the world and developed the recipe decades ago.

Today is World Fire Cider Day – to honor this woman and her generosity in teaching so many of us how to make the ultimate Food as Medicine immune elixir.

A few years ago, one company decided to trademark the name “Fire Cider” and created a rift in our herbal community by their aggressive protection of it. (Hence – my product is known as “Dragon Cider”)

Today, in solidarity of support of our beloved herbal teacher, we make and share the recipe far and wide – take a peak at the hashtag #firecider and check out the wonderful varieties out there.

Whether you make it yourself or buy a bottle from a local herbalist I hope you’ll give it a try!!
My favorite little recipe is

2 onions,

2 Cloves of Garlic

10 ” Fresh Horseradish

Fresh Ginger – the size of a man’s hand

Heaping cup of fresh turmeric root

1/2 cup dried elderberries

Seeds from one fresh pomegranate

1 tsp cayenne pepper or 1 fresh

roughly chop and place all ingredients in a large, clean glass jar.

cover completely with Apple cider vinegar, put on a tight lid and store in a cool, dark space for 4-6 weeks.

Strain –

you can use the cider as is

or

you can place cider on the stove on low heat, add Honey (to taste – I generally use 10 oz for a gallon of cider)

cool and bottle

This recipe is so versatile – use what you have seasonally available !
