Can I be excused? My brain is full.
Know that feeling?
“She’s strong – but she’s exhausted” feel like that’s your mantra?
If so, I’d love you to meet the ancient wonder berry Schisandra
I love this fun berry in teas and tinctures because it captures ALL 5 TASTES.
Sweet, sour, bitter, pungent and salty – all at once.
Like all the adaptogens I’ve introduced you to – this one has a vast array of benefits, but perhaps my favorite aspect of this herb is how it works in the brain. Some call it “a thinking herb” as it is used often by students studying hard to retain large amounts of information (I used it daily combined with goji berries while in my advanced intensive herbal trainings and saw a significant difference in my memory and recall.)
It is also an herb long treasured for its ability to retain youthfulness and promote longevity. It is often described in ancient texts as an astringent herb – specifically one that helps the body hold onto “Qi” or vital energy. I love the visual of this herb gently toning and strengthening the vital organs.
This herb protects the liver with studies showing remarkable improvements in fatty liver disease and antioxidant markers in the body , it has long been used to retain lung strength, reduce chronic coughs and is commonly combined with other tonifying herbs to improve lung function. Schisandra also protects and balances fluids in the kidneys and helps regulate the nervous system, benefits the cardiovascular system and improves endurance and stamina with many studies showing its effectiveness.
Like most herbs – schisandra is even more effective when combined with other herbs – it is commonly combined with ginsengs, goji berries to help with exhaustion and improve cognitive and ophiopogon and astragalus for fluid loss and reishi for longevity.
I LOVE to add the dried berries to tea -turning a sweet or dull tasting tea into something bright and kicky 😊.
